This Months Reads

Longitude by Dava Sobel
An interesting story of getting an accurate longitude measurement.
The Code Book by Simon Singh
Code history, plus a lot about public key cryptography. Good read.
The Cracking Code Book by Simon Singh
An inferior edition of the above book. Don't bother.

Fermat's last Theorem by Simon Singh
A real interesting story, even if you have no interest in maths and the like.

Also got a DVD out called The Fastest Indian
Great story about a New Zealander and his Indian motorcycle getting to over 200 mph. A bit mad in my view, but a different day and age in the 60s.
The indian cure for prostrate problems seems to be crushed up dog balls!

A Ride in Queensland

Interesting sign at the church next to the nursing home. I thought it optimistic that they would need an overflow parking area, but then it was pointed out to me that they have some big funerals there!

Recently visited my Mum in a Queensland nursing home. Kinda sad, as I don't think I will ever get to see her again. She has been going downhill since February 2006. Was moved in August 2006 to the Nursing home, and recently moved to the high intensity section. I am not sure I want to go that path.

I have a brother a bit further south, near the NSW border, a couple of vallies run in to the hinterland, one is the Tullebudgera valley, the other is the Currumbin Valley.

This sign is a bit different to the normal warning signs, it tells you what may happen if you disregard the sign. The southern rock face bank of the creek is private property, this is all they do to protect themselves, not even the local council would take the land back!

Currumbin Valley is "richer" than Tullebudgerra valley, the cars are bigger, the houses have newer paint and they have an eco-village which in my mind is a gimmick to rip another $100000 off yuppie eco freaks. The photo above is a eco bus shelter ??

The third photo is at the junction of the Tullebudgera valley Rd and Cougill Mountain Rd (looking south). Very pretty setting.

The first photo is the bike path under and later beside the Coronation drive in Brisbane. This is a worthwhile ride in its own right, and on a fine Sunday, it is packed with walkers, runners and cyclists.

The next photo, taken a bit north of Burleigh looking towards Broadbeach, shows the path assigned to cyclist on a road which runs next to the coast. Again, the paths on the Gold Coast are great, and well patronized by all.

Anti Bush Demo - 8 Sep 2007

Georgie Bush came to Sydney town for an APEC conference. The usual demos with a strong police presence and a gaggle of photographers and hangers on. My estimate of numbers was;

Demonstrators 500
Police 200
Photographers 200
Hangers on 100
Spectators 500

Unfortunately the loudspeaker system was woeful, and I couldn't understand a word of their rants, but presume it was anti Bush type stuff.

Scroll down for some photos

This is a take off of an advertisement by the Australian Government urging people to report domestic or personal violence.
The people with this sign knew what the demonstration was all about. Most of the others had absolutely no idea
   Police galore
Reinforcements come in by bicycle (there was an equine flu scare at the time!)
Sort of, you are not gonna get past here folks.
Free trade at full speed, good entrepreneurs are not ones to miss and opportunity. Lots of badges and mementoes to sell.
There you are, told you free trade was good.
However make sure you have a selection of signs. Guess this bloke was paid by Bush to provide a counter view.
Tony Abbot would hve been pleased. Good to see how people view their local politicians.
And the anti nukers had their say, I thought they had disappeared, oh well, still some old timers around.
And the anti zionist, pro Palistinians were there with their beaut bill board.
Now we are getting to the nitty gritty of What this demo was really about
Indeed, what about diarrhoea, got to get these demos into perspective.
Now don't forget about Tibet, I was surprised the dali lama didn't turn up.
Even the christians were there, they had a ting about greed.
No Placard, no worries, just paste it onto you bicycle. Wasn't just quite sure what the message was, between sewage, fat and dil. Ah well, doesn't matter
Must have been the university economists view on APEC.
Here we have a Human Rights Monitor. Main job was to photograph police it seems. He objected to be photographed and hurled his hoons at me, but they were a bit stymied because I was right next to the police :-)
Another monitor, they really didn't like being photographed.
